Signs point to Mauer staying with the Twins
A first indication that hometown hero, catcher Joe Mauer might remain with the Twins came Thursday.
Mauer and many of the big-name Twins were at the Minneapolis Hilton for the fifth-annual Diamond Awards, a fundraiser for ALS.
At the event, Mauer talked to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS about his contract negotiations.
“I believe everything will work out, you know, and I’m just going to try and let it happen,” said Mauer. “I’ve been getting a lot of questions the last few weeks and I know people are concerned, but you just have let things happen and let them sort themselves out.”
To make it a little more concrete, Joe Nathan said that Mauer’s contract was a matter of when, not if.
5 EYEWITNESS NEWS Sports Director Joe Schmit reported that fans shouldn’t expect a contract deal to be done this weekend, but the signs are pointing to Mauer sticking with the Twins for a long, long time.
Schmit said don’t be surprised if Mauer’s deal is in the 10-year range.
