StarTribune Interview and Video: 5 questions with Joe Mauer
FORT MYERS, FLA. – It took roughly 60 days and about five face-to-face meetings to get to this point, the point where the usually stoic Joe Mauer would be on the verge of tears and the Twins would make history.
With a few pen strokes on a piece of paper — with the same pen that was used to sign him to his first pro contract — the Twins inked Mauer to the fourth-largest contract in Major League Baseball history: $184 million over eight years. It’s a landmark deal for a franchise that in 1999 had a payroll of $19 million, or $4 million less than the $23 million Mauer will earn in each year of his mega-deal.
