‘Beat up’ Mauer admits a couple of days off would help
He’d rather not talk injuries; his manager would rather he take a break.

DETROIT — Joe Mauer has bristled at any question about his injuries this season, and Sunday was no different.
Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said a doctor examined Mauer’s right shoulder Saturday and prescribed anti-inflammatory medication. Mauer did not play in Sunday’s 6-3 victory over the Tigers.
“It’s part of the position,” Mauer said. “I’m just a little beat up; that’s about it. I don’t even really like talking about all this stuff. I’m kind of surprised [the shoulder news is] out there, but I got checked out, and we’re trying to get it healthy.”
Mauer, 27, took repeated foul tips off the shoulder during the road trip, as he batted 3-for-19, lowering his average to .293.
As players scattered for the three-day All-Star break Sunday, a slumping and aching Mauer flew to Anaheim, Calif. The three-time batting champ was baseball’s leading vote-getter, so he’ll start Tuesday’s All-Star Game, as planned, and likely catch about five innings.
“It would be nice to get a couple days off for your body,” Mauer said. “It’s a great honor and fun event, so I’m happy to go out there and represent the team. I wish I could bring my buddy [Justin Morneau] along, but he’s got to get some rest, too.”
